Common Signs of ENT Problems in Children That Parents Often Miss

Doctor examining a child’s ear for ENT problems.

Kids do not always say, “My ears feel blocked” or “I can’t breathe well through my nose.” Some ENT concerns can be difficult for children to explain and easy for parents to overlook. Knowing what to watch for can help you decide when it’s time for an ENT evaluation.

At ENT Specialists of Austin in Austin and Cedar Park, TX, Dr. Robert Nason, Dr. Lindsay E. Young, Dr. Kelsey Mothersole, and Dr. Stephanie Youssef provide ENT care for children and adults. Dr. Nason is board-certified in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery with fellowship training in pediatric otolaryngology.

What Are Some Overlooked Signs of ENT Problems in Children?

Here are a few signs that may point to an underlying ear, nose, or throat concern:

  • Not responding when you call their name: It can look like your child is distracted, but inconsistent responses can sometimes signal difficulty hearing. You may also notice louder TV volume or trouble following directions.
  • Speech that seems delayed or unclear: Hearing plays an important role in speech and language development. Persistent middle ear fluid can temporarily reduce hearing and, in some children, contribute to speech delays.
  • Restless or disrupted sleep: Frequent waking, snoring, or noisy breathing deserves attention, especially when it becomes a regular pattern. Enlarged tonsils, nasal blockage, or other ENT concerns may interfere with comfortable breathing at night.
  • Frequent mouth breathing: Children sometimes breathe through their mouths during a cold. When it happens regularly, however, nasal congestion or obstruction may be worth evaluating.
  • Recurring ear trouble without obvious pain: Ear infections do not always look dramatic. Younger children may become irritable, sleep poorly, eat less, or have trouble hearing rather than clearly telling you their ear hurts.
  • A voice that stays hoarse: Occasional hoarseness after yelling or an illness is common. Hoarseness that keeps returning or doesn’t improve may warrant an ENT evaluation.

When Should You Consider a Pediatric ENT Evaluation?

Pay closer attention when a change persists, keeps returning, affects sleep or communication, or begins interfering with school and everyday activities.

A pediatric ENT evaluation can help determine what is behind the change and what care, if any, your child needs. ENT Specialists of Austin provides pediatric ENT care for families in Austin and Cedar Park.
